Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William County Half Marathon Was Huge Success

Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William County Half Marathon held on October 1, 2017, at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia was a huge success! Susan Butler, Sarah Knapp, Patricia Palmer and Danubia Arias participated in the race and Roberta Henault volunteered at the finish line. Patricia placed in the top 300 out of the 1,600 registered runners. After the race the ShounBach team enjoyed the live music, food, and beer garden. ShounBach were proud sponsors of the event and donated the beer garden cups to the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation.

Kathryn Taylor attended Breakfast with the Judges on October 10, 2017. The Young Lawyers Section of the Fairfax Bar Association organizes this event. It is held annually to support the development of young lawyers. It also provides young lawyers the opportunity to meet the Judges they will appear before in an informal setting. This year it was attended by Judge Sotelo, Judge Daniel, Judge Carr, Judge Clayton and Judge Petit from the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

ShounBach Fall Festivities

On Friday, October 6th the Firm participated in some fall festivities and headed to the Corn Maze in The Plains. A picnic lunch was provided and then we were split into teams to take on the corn maze. Each team wore a different color bandana. The competition was close but the Blue Team made it through the corn maze in record time. After the corn maze there were slides to go down, animals to check out and even a pumpkin slinging station. It was a beautiful day and a great team building event.

Hope Rosen has been licensed to practice in Virginia for fifteen years, with a focus on family law for the last thirteen years. She has handled a variety of cases over the course of her career including equitable distribution of complex marital assets, same sex divorce, custody, support and prenuptial agreements. ShounBach’s FitBit Office Challenge

On October 1st, our Firm started an interoffice FitBit challenge. In teams of five, we are competing against each other for a total of 4 weeks. At the end of the challenge, the winning team will have a contribution made by the Firm for a charity of their choosing. Hayden has served as President since 2015 and has been a Board Member since 2012. On September 8, 2017, at the Prince William County Bar Association luncheon Susan Butler gave a presentation titled “Crafting a Great Opening Argument.” The CLE (continuing legal education) Seminar highlighted what to consider when drafting your opening statement in court. The Prince William County Bar Association holds a luncheon monthly at the Old Town Sports Pub with a presentation on a specific area of law or topic of interest.

We are pleased to announce that Kathryn R. Taylor has joined our firm. Ms. Taylor is a native of Northern Virginia and is a graduate of the University of Virginia. She received her J.D. from George Mason University School of Law, where her internships focused on family as well as criminal law matters. After graduation and prior to joining the firm, she formally served for two years as the judicial law clerk to the Honorable Penney S. Azcarate of the Circuit Court of Fairfax County. During her clerkship, she was actively involved with the Fairfax Bar Association Young Lawyers Section.

Each August, ShounBach’s members of the Paralegal Section of the Fairfax Bar Association participate in the Back to School Supply Drive. Backpacks filled with school supplies for the upcoming year are provided to the students. This project benefits preschool and school aged children assisted through Next Step and New Hope Housing, non-profit organizations.

ShounBach Hosts Tent at Virginia Gold Cup Races

On May 6, 2017, ShounBach hosted a tent and encouraged colleagues, friends and family to join the festivities at the 92 nd Virginia Gold Cup Races at Great Meadows in The Plains, Virginia. The Virginia Gold Cup has been held since 1922, is one of the nation’s largest steeplechase races and draws sellout crowds of over 50,000 people. Ten year old Ebanour ridden by Gus Dahl took the lead in the last obstacle and won the Virginia Gold Cup by 1 1/2 lengths. Despite the dreary weather a great time was had by all.

On May 15, 2017, Sarah Knapp and Dan Schy of ShounBach, attended the Fairfax Bar Association 17 th Annual Spring Golf Tournament at Westfields Golf Club in Clifton, Virginia, benefiting the Fairfax Law Foundation. Over 200 IAFL European Chapter members from 29 different countries attended the meeting, kicking off with a Welcome Reception at the Four Seasons. Susan Butler attended the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) Annual Meeting held November 2-5 in Chicago. Ms. Butler attended many CLE’s covering topics from recent tax cases to business valuation. She is also a member of the Amicus and Negotiation Committees, which held planning meetings. The Negotiation Committee is currently planning for a program in conjunction with the Harvard Law School Project on Negotiation.

On May 12, 2016, ShounBach attorney Dan Schy attended a meeting of Northern Virginia Firms in Service, a forum for the coordination of pro bono efforts for leading law firms in the area. Dan spoke about the Attorney of the Day Program, a pro bono project of Legal Services of Northern Virginia, which he helped create in 2007. The program provides free legal representation for domestic violence victims seeking protective orders. ShounBach attorneys have represented dozens of domestic violence victims through the program since its inception, and they continue to volunteer for the program today.

In an effort to fill in the gaps in legal services for individuals who are dealing with domestic violence and other contested family law issues, multiple groups are working together to develop the Domestic Violence Family Law Fellowship. This fellowship serves as an additional pathway for providing counsel to those who do not qualify for government-paid legal aid based on their incomes but who still cannot afford private attorneys. Mission Trip to Banica

I recently returned from a Mission Trip to Banica, a small town in Dominican Republic near the border of Haiti. The goal of our mission was to assist a family of nine that had recently been displaced from their home. In the photos below, you will see the patchwork home the family was living in prior to being displaced. The other photos are of 6 of the 7 children in the family, and a photo of a home that was just built by a prior mission group that we were going to use as a template for our project.
