“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
ShounBach stands in solidarity against racism, oppression and violence.
As lawyers, we all went to law school with dreams of using the law to make the world a better place and helping people. Many of us wanted (and still want) to change the world, to protect those who need protection and to do our part to help those in need.
Through our own individual lives, our experiences have shaped who we are. However, we are all aligned under the principle that there must be equal justice under the law. And not just for those who most resemble the original authors of the law.
We are watching, feeling simultaneously heartbroken and desperate for change, while our nation is suffering in the wake of the recent the killings of George Floyd in Minnesota, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and Breonna Taylor in Kentucky. These killings, as well as the many before them, show how far we still have to go. This issue must be addressed. We must do better.
To those of you who have suffered due to the systematic racism that plagues our country, we see you. We hear you. We support you. We stand together against injustice. However, these words alone are not sufficient. As we each take what steps we can individually to create change, we have made a firm donation to the Equal Justice Initiative as a beginning step. We will continue to support this movement.
