This year ShounBach is a proud sponsor of the Loudoun Law Camp. Law Camp
is a week long summer camp held each year for high school seniors from
Fauquier and Loudoun county high schools to educate students about the
legal system and introduce them to careers in the law.
Applications are accepted in April each year and only twenty-four seniors
are chosen to take part in the program. The Law Camp is organized by the
Loudoun County Bar Association and is a sponsored event so there is no
cost to the students. Sponsorships comes from several different sources
including private law firms like ShounBach, Loudoun County Bar Association,
Loudoun County Bar Foundation and Fauquier County Bar Association.
During the camp students receive instruction from volunteers and mentors
such as attorneys, judges and law clerks. The students are broken up into
teams during which time they are introduced to several different aspects
of the legal system, i.e. civil and criminal law, courtroom procedures,
crime scene investigation and preservation of evidence. The students participate
in hands-on demonstrations and work on team building skills. The week
culminates with a mock trial before a Circuit Court Judge. To prepare
for their trial, students are given case outlines, visit crime scenes,
interview and prepare witness testimony for trial, and prepare exhibits
to be used as evidence.
The camp is not all work and no play, however, the students also participate
in recreational activities such as volleyball, soccer, dancing and water
activities. Students also receive a private tour of the United States
Supreme Court where they get to behind-the-scenes.
